Deal of the Week: Medtronic Acquires NDI Medical
Medtronic has acquired privately held NDI Medical (neurostimulation devices) for $42mm in cash. NDI Medical, which was established in 2002, has developed the MedStim, a bladder pacing system that first attracted Medtronic's attention.
MedStim was created using IP from Case Western Reserve University; the implantable device delivers electrical stimulation to nerves in control of bladder function. It may potentially be used to treat the 13 million Americans that suffer from urinary incontinence. NDI is also working on its MicroPulse neurostimulation system, which uses a wireless rechargeable implantable pulse generator technology to treat mental disorders, obesity, respiratory illnesses, pelvic health, paralysis, cardiac conditions, and pain.
