BrainLAB, Smith & Nephew partner for surgical implants

Smith & Nephew PLC's orthopedics business licensed BrainLAB AG (image-guided and real-time surgical systems) exclusive rights to develop and sell its computer-assisted surgical technologies associated with hip and knee implants.

BrainLAB will incorporate S&N's IP and instruments, such as the PiGalileo Acculign motorized positioning guide and AchieveCAS, into its own orthopedic systems. The deal enables S&N to broaden the scope of its portfolio through BrainLAB's extensive network. S&N is in charge of marketing, sales support, training, and post-installation clinical support. BrainLAB will handle navigation equipment sales and applications training and service. The companies have been partners since 2003, when BrainLAB first began selling technolgies for S&N's implants.
