The previous three-month period brought in over 50% more. Just over a fifth of Q4's financing came from companies involved with biomaterials. This year only yielded a disappointing $3.3bn aggregate, only a little more than half of what medical device companies raised in 2007. M&A was also down in this industry during Q4, but J&J did manage a billion-dollar takeover of Mentor. In vitro diagnostics/research financing didn't fare much better this quarter, only contributing 15% to the annual total of $1.35bn. In fact, there weren't any IPOs or FOPOs in this industry during 2008. While not one in vitro diagnostics/research M&A was completed during the fourth quarter, China Medial Technologies made headlines with an alliance to buy MDT's HPV assay for $345mm.
