Oncology Outlook:
How Cutting-Edge Medical Technology Is
Improving the Odds for Cancer Patients
Originally published in Medtech Insight: Medical Technology Market Intelligence®
With a huge and still growing population vulnerable to breast, prostate and colon cancer, screening and treatment represent an almost unlimited market. But some devices and diagnostics are the wave of the future — including digital tomosynthesis imaging, partial breast irradiation, virtual colonoscopy and HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) prostate treatment — while others are starting to suffer from their own individual drawbacks. Where should you jump into the market? Who's already there, and who's challenging the major players? This Special Report answers all these questions and more with in-depth analysis of the potential market for everything from traditional radiation oncology to the leading-edge robotic radical prostatectomy diagnosis and treatment modalities.
This detailed 55-page report is a must-read for every R&D, business development and investment executive in medical technology today, from surgical device manufacturers to medical imaging companies, and even the oncology physician or surgeon seeking improved diagnostics and treatment options for their patients.
Prepared by Medtech Insight’s expert analysts, the report spotlights the problems of traditional therapies and uncovers the technologies that seek to solve those problems, including details of companies and manufacturers heavily engaged in this space.
This Special Report examines ...
* Areas of research that could potentially generate methods to control or even eliminate breast cancer
* Colon cancer screening solutions that are potentially less invasive and more sensitive than traditional colonoscopy. Technologies that aim to make traditional post-lumpectomy radiation both safer and more convenient
* Colon cancer screening solutions that are less invasive than sigmoidoscopy but just as sensitive, including high definition video endoscopy from market leader Olympus America to Pentax's
* i-SCAN Image Postprocessing Technology
* The $2.2 billion potential market for prostate cancer screening and treatments
* The promise of genetic-based prostate cancer tests and treatments such as brachytherapy and external beam radiation ... and much more.

Who's out in front -- Hologic or GE Healthcare ... or neither?
With digital mammography rapidly emerging as the standard-of-care in breast cancer screening, market leader Hologic seemed to be ensuring its market share with its top-of-the-line full-field digital mammography (FFDM) technology -- until its new Selenia Dimensions tomosynthesis mammography
system faltered at its June FDA Advisory Panel Review meeting. Another giant of medical device manufacturers, GE Healthcare, is pursuing similar advances, but is believed to have been about a year behind Hologic when it hit the FDA roadblock. In this report, you'll discover the prognosis for these market leaders and also learn about the potential impact of other emerging breast imaging technologies, such as breast MRI, cone beam CT, breast-specific gamma imaging, and 3-D terahertz imaging, as well as advances in and molecular biology and nanotechnology that could impact this space.
The raging debate over new breast cancer cures
While several small studies suggest that current partial breast radiation techniques are as effective at
preventing cancer recurrences as whole breast radiation, there are no large, long-term, randomized studies to back this up, and therein lies one of the biggest problems facing this field. This report examines the controversy in which critics charge that clinicians have been too eager to adopt the technique, without proper data backup, and how the debate will impact this growing segment of the market.
Making colonoscopy bearable will drive profits
When it comes to efficacious colonoscopy screening, it's all about getting a complete and accurate test in spite of patient discomfort. This report examines a a complete range of options, as well as their financial prospects. Companies like Spirus Medical have technologies that allow gastroenterologists to overcome challenging colonoscopies, generating impressive financing from the biggest investors. New adjunctive technologies could also play an important role in expanding the application and utilization of colonoscopy. Products to watch include Ethicon Endo-Surgery's recently panel-approved SEDASYS computer-assisted sedation system, which could enable more providers to offer deep sedation to their colonoscopy patients, and various technologies to enable in-situ tissue characterization during colonoscopy that could reduce unnecessary polyp removal and thus significantly lower costs. In addition to these technologies, researchers continue to make progress in their pursuit of less invasive alternatives to colonoscopy, including virtual CT colonography and capsule endoscopy.
From market share to technology to investment trends, these are just some of the issues and actionable insight included in this must-read report.
