FDA and the Federal Communications Commission hope to make life easier for developers of wireless medical devices by improving the efficiency of their overlapping regulatory processes, according to an agreement announced by heads of the two agencies July 26.
FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg and FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski unveiled a memorandum of understanding as they kicked off a two-day public meeting to discuss challenges related to medical devices that utilize broadband and wireless communication technologies, such as wireless sensors that remotely monitor heart rhythms and portable glucose monitoring systems.
"We're here because we knew we needed strong partnership," Hamburg said as the meeting opened.
