The Medicare Evidence Development and Coverage Advisory Committee met Sept. 22 at CMS headquarters in Baltimore to weigh in on the agency's next steps on the technology.
While CMS does not have a national coverage analysis open on bone morphogenetic proteins, BMP use has skyrocketed in recent years, with as much as 85% of it off-label (1 'The Gray Sheet' Sept. 20, 2010).
The MedCAC panelists said there is not yet enough scientific evidence to support most off-label use of BMP technology, and they came up with detailed recommendations for further research.
