Biopharma alliance dollars for both June and July increased dramatically over May's activity. Front-runners for June were J&J's $586 million respiratory deal with Orexo and Bayer Schering's cancer partnership with OncoMed valued at about $540 million.
M&A deals were far stronger in June over July, with more than $17 billion committed in that month among the top four in biopharma and one on the device side. Leading the pack was Grifol's $3.4 billion bid (plus $600 million in debt) for privately owned Talecris.
Over the two months, public financing activity was much slower than during the spring. Both biopharma and device were busy raising private money, however, bringing in over $1.3 billion in June and July (compared with only $157 million in public sales).
