FDA Principal Deputy Commissioner Joshua Sharfstein is expected to announce today that he is relinquishing his post to become secretary of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
Sharfstein and Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley are expected to make the announcement around noon today at a press conference in Annapolis.
The FDA No. 2 was reportedly directing calls to the governor's office yesterday. A spokesman for O'Malley, a Democrat, said he was unable to discuss the matter until the Jan. 5 press conference.
During a Jan. 4 ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new Maryland casino, however, O'Malley told reporters he was "delighted" to have Sharfstein on board, according to the Baltimore Sun.
