Republicans in Congress introduced bills last week that would repeal the medical device excise tax before it takes effect in 2013, but few Democrats have jumped on board publicly so far.
Device lobbyists are hoping they can build bipartisan support for the bills based on an argument that the tax will cause job losses and a greater focus on foreign markets in the device industry.
The levy will have a “devastating impact on investment in R&D, on job creation and on patient care,” said Mark Leahey, president and CEO of the Medical Device Manufacturers Association, in an interview.
Rep. Erik Paulsen, R-Minn., in the House and Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, introduced the identical bills to repeal the tax Jan. 25.
