The president sent his 2012 budget request to Congress Feb. 14, proposing a 4.8% increase over current appropriations levels for CDRH.
Including $66 million in industry-paid user fees, the device center would receive total funding of $395 million.
The president's fiscal 2012 budget request seeks $2.74 billion in federal appropriations for FDA as a whole, up around $382 million, or 16%, from 2010 appropriations of $2.36 billion.
CDRH's efforts to establish a national device registry would receive $4 million in funding. The registry would "harness the vast amount of untapped public health information" to help regulators understand real-world device safety and effectiveness.
With the registry, "FDA will be in a better position to effectively detect and respond to device-related public health issues," the agency explains in its 2012 budget justification document.
