Neurointerventional device innovation has made great strides since the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) in 1996, opening up the doors to a new era in ischemic stroke treatment. Since then, device manufacturers have been striving to extend the possibility of effective treatment for acute brain ischemia beyond the golden three-hour tPA time window, by developing technologies aimed at improving blood vessel recanalization rates, minimizing damage to brain tissue, improving outcomes, and preventing strokes from occurring or recurring. Some of these efforts have been successful and others have not, but the field continues to attract investment dollars and R&D resources, with those involved fully aware that a winning technology in this still underserved area would address a blockbuster opportunity in terms of potential profits.
With many of the large device markets such as orthopedics and spine now maturing and exhibiting slowdowns in procedure volumes and sales, a number of industry giants seeking out new growth opportunities and expanded product portfolios have been aggressively moving into the evolving stroke-related device arena. This trend has accelerated recently, with approximately $6 billion invested in this market just in the last eight months.
At this February's International Stroke Conference (ISC) held in Los Angeles, the latest advances in cerebrovascular disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention were highlighted, including cutting-edge endovascular therapies for use in acute ischemic stroke treatment and prevention, as well as new options for more deadly hemorrhagic stroke. As the latest data from the American Heart Association (AHA), released in late December, illustrates, more lives are being saved from stroke than ever before, which is very positive news for a condition that afflicts one American every 40 seconds.
