University of Michigan spin-out 3D Biomatrix aims to weed out ineffective preclinical drug candidates early in the discovery process. Its low-cost, three-dimensional cell culture plates and scaffolds are designed to retain a much higher complexity of body response than traditional two-dimensional cell cultures, and thus better predict potential results in human patients. Laura Schrader is CEO of the company, which started selling its products last August.
ADC Therapeutics SARL
ADC Therapeutics launched with a $50 million commitment from Celtic Therapeutics and a pipeline of 10 proprietary antibody-drug conjugate programs targeting multiple major cancers. The start-up’s candidates will be based on payload and linker technology developed by Spirogen, another Celtic-backed biotech. ADC Therapeutics is headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland, and is headed by Celtic partner Michael Forer.
GeneCentric Diagnostics Inc.
GeneCentric Diagnostics is developing molecular diagnostic tests to guide physicians to the appropriate therapy for patients with non small-cell lung cancer. Its technology, licensed from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, examines the expression of 54 genes to distinguish the subtype of NSCLC. Hatteras Venture Partners provided $250,000 in seed funding. Hatteras partner and former LabCorp exec Myla Lai-Goldman, MD, is the start-up’s CEO.
