This year’s EuroPCR conference, held in Paris in May, was definitely the coming out party for renal denervation (RDN), highlighting what many clinicians and industry executives point to as the next potential blockbuster device product market. In that way, RDN is following in the footsteps of transcatheter aortic valves (TAVI) and drug-eluting stents (DES), both of which were unveiled at previous EuroPCR meetings and remain important topics today, with numerous sessions on both at this year’s conference.
But renal denervation was clearly the belle of this year’s EuroPCR, with more than a dozen sessions on the topic (several of which were company-sponsored). In addition, just preceding the meeting, Covidien PLC announced its acquisition of RDN start-up Maya Medical Inc., and at the conference,St. Jude Medical Inc. unveiled its EnligHTN renal denervation system, which was prominently featured at the company’s large booth.
Indeed, the interest in renal denervation among large companies, start-ups, entrepreneurs and investors has taken on a life of its own, becoming the stuff of corporate myth to the point where it is getting hard to separate reality from exaggeration, most notably when it comes to the number of companies with RDN products and programs. A senior Medtronic Inc. executive estimated the number at 62, an estimate that has since been picked up in at least one analyst’s report, and is making its way through the industry grapevine. A senior Johnson & Johnson executive estimated the number at 42, lower but no less specific.
