Although the US Supreme Court recently upheld the constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), the debate still rages on health care reform. Efforts to repeal the ACA are ongoing and there is a great deal of uncertainty as to what impact the new law will actually have on the economy, consumers, providers, and businesses. Whatever the outcome of current discussions, preventive care will remain at the forefront of any health care reform effort, and companies with screening and diagnostic technologies could very well benefit from this changing dynamic in the health care system.
One clinical area that could see a boost from expanded coverage under health care reform is colorectal cancer (CRC) screening. (See "Capsule Endoscopy: Poised For Growth" — Medtech Insight, August 2012.) CRC is the third most common type of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in the US. Today, only half of the US population aged 50 and older is regularly screened for CRC, according to the American Cancer Society. With expanded insurance coverage under health care reform, will more people seek CRC screening? What impact will health care reform have on the market for colonoscopy products and other CRC screening technologies? To find out more about trends in CRC screening and how the ACA might impact CRC screening in the US, Medtech Insight spoke with Brian Jacobson, MD, associate professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine, and the chair of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy’s (ASGE) Health and Public Policy Committee, which advocates for legislative and regulatory issues pertaining to endoscopic practice and patient care.
