Eric Topol, director of the Scripps Translational Science Institute in San Diego, Calif., is considered a preeminent authority on digital health. In 2009, he was named one of 12 Rock Stars of Science by GQ Magazine. Early this year, he released a book on “The Creative Destruction of Medicine: How the Digital Revolution Will Create Better Health Care.”
A practicing cardiologist, Topol has been involved in medical technology development for more than 25 years. Several years ago, he co-founded, with the wireless technology firm Qualcomm and philanthropists Gary and Mary West, the West Wireless Health Institute, recently renamed the West Health Institute. Before that, he spent 14 years at Cleveland Clinic.
Topol is optimistic that advances in wireless health technologies and genomic medicine can help create a more efficient, less invasive and consumer-driven way to monitor chronic health conditions.
