Renal denervation is arguably the hottest new device technology to come along in years, with applications in a variety of chronic diseases including hypertension and diabetes, to name just two. Yet just over a decade ago, most people laughed off the concept, and they might still be laughing were it not for the efforts of a novel device development company called Coridea.
Mark Gelfand And Howard Levin, The Folks Who Brought You Renal Denervation

Having helped pioneer devices used in renal denervation, arguably the most disruptive medical technology in the past 20 years, the Coridea team is onto their next big thing.
When you consider all of the buzz, maybe even hype, that surrounds renal denervation (RDN) these days – the enormous potential to treat serious health problems including and beyond hypertension, the huge on-rush of companies eager to enter the space with new technologies and approaches, the dozens of programs on the topic at clinical meetings, and the burgeoning M&A interest by big device companies – it’s easy to forget that just a decade ago, renal denervation was unheard of by most people and dismissed by many of those who did know about it. Though papers on the basic science behind RDN go back decades in the clinical literature, a lot of very smart people shrugged off the idea of developing devices for RDN as, in the words of one device executive, “a science project.”
It’s not much of a stretch to say that RDN as a valued and valuable device category would never have seen the light of day had it not been for Howard R. Levin, MD, and Mark Gelfand, the physician and engineer, respectively, behind Coridea, a hard-to-characterize group that brings a novel and creative approach to device development. Not really an incubator, Coridea is better described as an idea generator that draws its inspiration from a pharma-like approach to clinical problems with deep roots in basic science and physiology.
