Efforts Accelerate To Add Unique Device IDs To Insurance Claims

Health care and consumer groups are trying to take advantage of a window of opportunity to have unique device identifier information incorporated into health insurance claims as soon as possible to facilitate better data collection and more effective product recalls.
The Accredited Standards Committee X12, the organization that oversees the standards for what can be included in electronic insurance claims, is exploring changes to claims forms, and it could be a few years until the ASC X12 group considers revisions again.
“This is a process that they say happens once every three years or so. So this is a critical opportunity to add UDI data to the claims form” said Josh Rising, director of The Pew Charitable Trusts’ Medical Device Initiative, which is playing an organizing role in efforts to incorporate UDIs into the health care system including claims and electronic health records.
Pew joined five other health care organizations, including AARP and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, in penning a letter
to the ASC X12 insurance subcommittee on April 7 formally requesting a “situational field” be added to electronic claims forms allowing capture and transmittal of UDIs, with a specific focus on high-risk implantable devices.
