CMS says June 11 it is considering a request from the Society for Vascular Surgery that the agency use national society registries to collect data on carotid stenting - rather than a less robust CMS data submission system - as part of its ongoing coverage reconsideration for the procedure. SVS, which has run a carotid stent registry since 2005, says its registry and another sponsored by the American College of Cardiology (the NCDR CARE registry) will capture more detailed information to perform a risk-adjusted analysis of the procedure. SVS also asks that data reporting requirements be extended beyond initial hospitalization to at least 30 days and potentially 12 months post-procedure. CMS is considering expanding national coverage of carotid stenting at the request of ACC and three other professional societies (1"The Gray Sheet" Feb. 11, 2008, p. 6). The agency will issue a proposed decision by Aug. 1.
