Deal of the Week: Accuray Licenses Autocontouring Technology from Morphormics
Alliance deal reprinted from Strategic Transactions - October 2008
Find out about how radiosurgery company Accuray has licensed development rights to Morphormics' (imaging) autocontouring technology for radiation treatment planning.
Morphormics was spun out of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2001, and holds an exclusive license to the unique platform from UNC. Autocontouring (also called autosegmentation) identifies and highlights boundaries of the prostate and surrounding anatomy and matches the measurements with CT scans to allow for more precise and focused delivery of radiation during the treatment of prostate cancer and minimize other structures' exposure to the drugs. The technology is still in the development stages, and when finalized will be incorporated into devices. Accuray sells the CyberKnife robotic radiosurgery system, which uses image guidance and computer-controlled robotic movements to noninvasively treat tumors anywhere in the body. The system keeps track of tumor placement and body movement in an effort to deliver high-dose radiation directly to the targeted site without damaging surrounding healthy tissue.
