nContact Surgical Inc. aims to merge the best of surgical and interventional techniques to provide a truly minimally invasive, single procedure solution for atrial fibrillation patients. Enabled by its endoscopic epicardial ablation devices, its convergent procedure is being evaluated for the treatment of atrial fibrillation in a fully closed-chest approach, without any incisions or ports. The procedure is performed in a single setting, usually in the electrophysiology lab.
The Numeris-AF Coagulation System with VisiTrax is used in the surgical portion of the procedure, in which VisiTrax integrates suction, perfusion and radiofrequency energy to create long linear lesions on the outside of a beating heart. The electrophysiologist then uses a catheter via the femoral arteries to complete the biatrial lesion pattern inside the heart.
"The convergent procedure enables ablation on both the inside and the outside of the heart," says John Funkhouser, president and CEO of nContact. "As a result, the reentrant circuits that are causing the problem can be isolated." Furthermore, the EP can perform diagnostic tests intraoperatively to "ensure that all of these areas of the heart have in fact been isolated and that these circuits have been interrupted," Funkhouser states.
