"I assure you that my commitment to [and] my understanding of the importance of supporting the kind of innovation you're talking about cannot be greater," Berwick told attendees at the AdvaMed 2010 MedTech conference in Washington, D.C. last week.
"We really need you as the pioneers, the explorers to find those new approaches to care that will make care better," Berwick said. "So we're on the same page."
Berwick, a pediatrician, praised advances in medical technology that have dramatically changed the prognosis for patients since he first began practicing medicine.
"There is a long list of illnesses for which I was trained to care … whose profile has completely changed since the time of my training," Berwick said in his Oct. 19 address.
More than 1,700 people attended the AdvaMed conference.
