Device industry groups are launching an all-out lobbying and media blitz in an effort to repeal the medical device tax, which is scheduled to go into effect Jan. 1 if Congress doesn’t act during the current lame duck session.
AdvaMed, the Medical Device Manufacturers Association and the Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance flew in more than 50 CEOs from device firms across the country to lobby Capitol Hill in person on Nov. 15.
The execs participated in about 60 meetings, which included face-time with Republican and Democratic leadership, as well as other key House and Senate members, including Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., who supports repeal, and Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., and Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., who have yet to publicly back the repeal effort.
CEOs who lobbied on the Hill included Caroll Neubauer, president and CEO of B. Braun Medical; Dan Moore, CEO of Cyberonics who also serves as chairman of MDMA; Don Fowler, president and CEO of Toshiba America Medical Systems; and Rob Cascella, CEO of Hologic.
The industry groups are pushing for tax repeal language to be included in end-of-the-year fiscal cliff legislation.
