Cataract and Refractive Surgery: Hoping For a Rebound

The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery's (ASCRS) 2009 annual symposium took place in April in San Francisco, against one of the darkest market backdrops in memory. Laser vision correction (LVC) procedure volumes declined precipitously in 2008, driven by the impact of the global economic crisis on consumer spending and elective procedures, and more of the same is expected for 2009. The economy has also affected the market for premium intraocular lenses (IOLs), leading to a flat market where there would otherwise be growth. Even the reliable, steady-growth Medicare cataract market has witnessed a rare decline.
